The West Marine master catalog has some details about the three stages
of charging Gel Cells.  They also have some very nice, new generation,
microcontroller controlled switch-mode chargers.  Get the 800 number

I thought they were almost identical to standard lead-acid batteries.
If so, then I think you want to charge them with a current-limited
constant-voltage source, similar in function to the voltage regulator
in an automobile.

This is sort of off-topic, but not too far. At a very odd garage sale this
past weekend, among piles of paper-tape readers and TI Silent 700 terminals,
I spotted (and bought) a tube audio generator. I planned to scavenge it for
parts to build a guitar amp, but now I'm not so sure.

It's a Hewlett Packard model 205A audio generator, serial number 22. It's in
a nice oak cabinet that appears to be original. It's got an apparently
conservatively rated 5 watt audio amplifier -- 2 6L6 in push-pull. The 6L6s
and most of the other tubes are metal cans, not glass. The manual is five
typed pages, and appears to be either a carbon copy (it's on onionskin) or
maybe a hectograph; it's not printed.

What the heck is this thing? Can anybody date it? IEEE Spectrum did an article
on HP a few years ago that said their 1st product was the model 200A audio
generator, in 1938. I'm *NOT* going to salvage parts from it to build a
guitar amp. Does anybody want it to restore, or for a museum piece or
whatever? Does HP have a historian?

I have no direct experience with this, but assuming you have an EFI
engine, there's been several postings saying problems like this can
be caused by the electric fuel pump.  One cure was the Radio Shack
snap on ferrite chokes, or a bypass capacitor may be needed in
bad cases.  The parts need to be install as close to the fuel pump
as possible.  Let me know if this is what caused your problem, please.

I just found something out -- the hard way!!

When I'm mobile, I usually take my HT along.  Since it's (nearly) summer here
in Chicago, I drive with the windows open.  Due to the wind noise, I have to
turn the HT volume way up.

WARNING from a now-wiser newbie:
    DON'T crank the volume if you're using a speaker-mic!
    It works fine as long as you're straining to hear those faint
    stations thru the wind noise in the car...

    But as soon as somebody calls up the autopatch, the HIGH-VOLUME
    dial tone blows your speaker  :(

    Note that a loud voice has never hurt my equipment (voices have
    alterations in pitch and volume) but a continous unrelenting
    buzz (like a dial tone) fries that puppy REAL fast!
